Overview and Goals

Comprehensive care that emphasizes a healthy lifestyle in conjunction with regular clinical monitoring is the single most effective factor in prevention of pregnancy complications and medically compromised infants.
The goals of LifeStart are to:

  • Identify and modify / eliminate reproductive risks
  • Decrease unnecessary cesarean births
  • Decrease preterm births and low birth weight infants
  • Increase breastfeeding

Registered nurses with a specialty in perinatal care provide state-of-the-art education and counseling to empower women to be active participants in their own care. LifeStart is an adjunct to regular obstetric care and coordinated with a physician or midwife.

Prenatal Program

This phone and mail program is for women in the first, second and early third trimesters of pregnancy. It includes:

  • Coordination with the primary provider
  • Average of 7 phone contacts during pregnancy and early postpartum
  • Case management approach to interaction with each participant
  • Ongoing comprehensive risk assessments
  • Individualized evidenced based health education, counseling and support
  • 24/7/365 clinical helpline
  • Monthly utilization and annual outcome reports

Preconception Program

This phone and mail program is for women planning a pregnancy in the next 12 months. It includes:

  • Comprehensive risk assessment
  • Average of 3 phone contacts in the 12 months preceding pregnancy
  • Case management approach to interaction with each participant
  • Individualized health education, counseling and support
  • 24/7/365 clinical helpline
  • Monthly utilization and annual outcome reports
